The Different Types of Beverages and How They Are Made

Beverages can never be irrelevant. People love to have coffee at work, lemonade during a hot day and a cold, aerated drink when watching a movie. Drinks are there for all occasions and all seasons. The fact that we have options for everything tells us how vast the beverage industry is.

The making and design of the factory or industry would depend on the type of drinks that are made. It can’t be the same for all sorts of drinks. Since the drinks are so different, there cannot be standard processing or making procedure. There can, however, be some steps that will be the same for all drinks.

First, let us take a look at what are the different types of beverages that are available.

Alcoholic Beverages

The drinks which are made and processed with the presence of alcohol in them are termed as alcohol beverages. The components will have alcohol highlighted as a significant component with the percentage also mentioned along.

Types Of Alcoholic Beverages

Fruits

There are alcoholic beverages which are made by processing the actual fruits. These are made by using the actual fruit and extracting the nutrients from it. These can be processed using two methods, which are distilled and non-distilled. The distilled fruit alcoholic beverage is brandy, and the non-distilled alcoholic beverage is wine.

Grains

Just like fruits, grains can also be further processed to make beverages. Grains have to be pressed and refined to make the drinks. This can be done by the same two methods of distillation and non-distillation. The distilled grain alcoholic beverage is whiskey, and the non-distilled grain alcoholic beverage is beer.

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Non-Alcoholic Beverages

There are a lot of non-alcoholic beverages which are famous as they can be had any time and anywhere without worrying much about the time and place as one has to for alcoholic beverages. These are prepared using fruits, milk, or carbonated drinks which have so many flavors.

Types Of Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Non-Carbonated

These drinks are termed as non-carbonated because these are not highly processed but made with natural flavors. These do not contain any carbon or artificial gas. These are beverages which have one strong natural flavor with preservatives. The main types of non-carbonated beverages are coffee, tea, and fruit juices. All of these have varieties and types.

Carbonated

As the name goes, these are carbonated beverages. To make them carbon is used along with sweetener and artificial flavors. The base of these drinks is either carbon dioxide or soda water. Carbon dioxide is a tasteless and colorless gas. It needs other flavors for variety. The primary type of carbonated drinks is carbonated water, soda water, and all other soft drinks.

The Processes Involved In Manufacturing Of Beverages

Now that we know the types of beverages, let us take a look at the process that is involved behind the manufacturing of these beverages. Below are the steps for the processing of a beverage

Clarification

This is the first step that is performed in beverage processing. It could also be termed as filtration. Certain drinks have other materials inside them which are not visible to the naked eye but do exist. Clarification involves separating these materials from beverages by way of using siliceous minerals and clays. For example, diatoms are used to clarify and filter beer, fruit juices and wine.

Sugar Dissolving

To make any beverage, sugar is generally used as a watery solution. To get sugar in a watery form, you need to dissolve it. You need to make standardized sugar syrup, and the concentration is around 60° Brix. The sugar is dissolved using continuous and discontinuous processes. In these processes, there’s a need to utilize industrial valves to control and regulate the flow. For this to happen, different kinds of mechanized valves are involved.

Blending

On this step, everything is mixed together. A drink needs to have water, flavors, sugar, colors, and preservatives. So all of these are blended in this step to form a beverage. Sugar and flavorings are added in pre-determined quantities to avoid an excess of anything and to maintain the taste of the drink.

Carbonating

As the name suggests, in this step, the drink is carbonated. It means carbon dioxide is added to the drink. Adding carbon dioxide to the drink makes it spirited, sparkly, and changes the taste. It makes the taste tangy and also prevents the spoilage of the drinks with its preservative qualifies. These are aerated drinks.

Filling

Once the drink is ready, these drinks are then filled out in the bottles or cans as the case may be. The process and machinery used are different in case of both. The quantity is pre-determined, and it is ensured that the same quantity gets added with the help of valves in the machinery. Valves regulate the flow and stop the drink at the right time.

Packaging

This is the final step of the process. In this step, the drink is packed up, and that makes the drink ready to be dispatched to the end user. It is essential that the drink is packaged nicely and sealed well so that it cannot be tampered with. Packaging ensures safety and protects the drink against any malfunction.
